Space Heater Safety and Important Considerations

With all the snow and chilly winds whipping across the country, people are looking for additional methods to keep warm. Space heaters frequently make the list along with thicker wool sweaters and socks. As wool products are generally very difficult to make unsafe, I will focus only on safety measures for space heaters.

Space heaters have become much safer over the past couple of decades, however, they still posses the potential for catastrophe if not used properly. Specifically, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 25,000 residential fires occur annually with 300 fatalities as result of improperly utilized space heaters. Those are scary statistics but, fortunately, properly used they should not pose a hazard.

The most important safety consideration is to keep a distance of at least four feet around the heater completely free of objects or people. Stray items such as blankets, toys, plastic containers, etc. leaning against or in close proximity to the heater can cause a fire. In fact, a 2005 Harvard University analysis found that the leading cause of space heater fires was combustibles too close to the unit.

Next, do not use extension cords with your electric space heater -- plug it directly into an outlet. Preferably, the outlet will have an AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter). Electric space heaters draw a lot of current and can easily overload light duty extension cords and power strips. If you must use and extension cord, be sure to buy a heavy duty model available at hardware and home improvement stores. If a cord is only two pronged, it is absolutely not fit to work with a heater. Additionally, be sure to route or secure the cord in such a fashion that it won't be a tripping hazard.

A few things NOT to do with your space heater include:

- using an electric version in a bathroom

- leaving it on while nobody is in the room or in the house

- cooking over the unit

- thawing frozen pipes

- drying items on or near the unit

Further, when purchasing a space heater ensure that it has four features: 1) it has been tested by an independent laboratory such as Underwriter's Laboratories (UL), 2) it is fully enclosed, 3) it has a tip sensor and 4) it has a timer. First, it is important that your heater has been tested by a laboratory so that you know you are purchasing a quality device without defects or poor craftsmanship. In this fashion, you will avoid many dangerous issues. Second, a fully enclosed heater is constructed so that the exterior does not become sufficiently hot to burn somebody touching the heater. Third, a timer is necessary so that your heater does not run for long periods of time. Running a a space heater continuously can allow it to overheat and cause a fire. To avoid this, set the timer on your heater for several hours so that you do not have to worry about turning it off at a particular time. It is one less important item that you have to keep in mind. Lastly, It is not uncommon for space heater fires to result from tipped over heaters igniting the carpet on the floor. Avoid this possibility with a tip sensor. Heaters equipped with a tip sensor will shut themselves off if they are propelled into any position other than their proper operating orientation.

Although this may be obvious, it is important enough to mention -- keep a sharp eye on pets and children in the vicinity of an operating space heater. Curiosity and space heaters do not mix well at all.

Finally, when first using your heater at the beginning of the colder seasons, be sure to inspect it for fraying wires and broken parts. Repair any issues before placing your heater into operation.

Keeping these pointers in mind will help keep you and your family toasty warm without an increased risk of harm. That is certainly better than needing to break out the ugly wool sweater at the back of your closet!

I have one of these units in my home office, where laser toner dust, paper dust, cat and dog hair and other 'pollutants' make the air pretty nasty. Now that I have this unit in the office, those problems are GONE. I leave it running on Silent during office hours (and it really is virtually silent), and I set it to Turbo when I leave the office. The air stays fresh all day, and in the mornings the office smells like mountain air. I look forward to coming into the office now.

I've had other air cleaners in the past, electrostatic and HEPA, but they didn't come close to freshening the air like this one does.

Allergy relief, at last - Skoro - Texas
Allergies have caused me years of nighttime misery. During allergy season I renew prescriptions for medications which are semi-effective, at best. I drag through life from day to day with little sleep and a lot of congestion. That is, until I put a Rabbit Air SPA-700A in my bedroom. It's so effective at removing pollen and improving the air quality that I now get a full night's sleep w/o medications and I wake up w/o itchy eyes and a plugged up nose. The Rabbit Air in auto mode just runs quietly and does its thing w/o need of adjustment or operator input. It's fully automated and it really does the job.

Rabbit air purifier is very sleek and seems to work great. Whenever I smoke, the light sensor changes color to red (poor air quality) and starts working hard. Several years ago before Cosumer Reports slandered Sharper Image out of business, I bought an Ionic Breeze Quadra from my neighborhood Shaper Image store. It was expensive at the time but I thought it was well worth it. Well as soon as my wife read the report about ionic air cleaners, she bought it hook, line and sinker... and why not, is Consumers Reports EVER wrong? (BTW the answer to that is yes, more offer than people realize) So she packed it away in the attic and refused to look at it, let alone use it. There is sat for almost 3 years. Today, while cleaning the attic I found my old friend. I dusted off the box, took out the Quadra and hooked it up in my office. Suddenly, my office smells clean. I feel like I can breathe again. It's spring-time in South Jersey... take means everything outside is covered in a thick layer of yellow pollen. well, I'm safe inside with my old friend. It still works perfectly and is completely silent. This product is amazing. Like or not, it works.

For the record, I see nothing that says it will eliminate the need for you to dust ever again. I didn't buy it for that reason and if you did... well, you're either lazy or a fool. And as far as the zapping noise goes, I was instructed when I bought this that you should clean it with a DRY cloth. If you need to use Windex or something, you MUST let it dry before using it. If you get a zapping sound, that means the collection plates are still holding moisture. Think about it... negative and positive ions and a little bit of moisture... that's the same recipe for a lightning storm! Let the plates air dry. Just because you wiped them dry does not mean that they are dry. My Quadra is now and always was COMPLETELY silent. The little bathroom one on the other hand was never silent. It was a free gift for spending 0, what do you expect?

In an objective summary: it remove odors, removes something from the air as the collection plates need to be cleaned twice a week, it is completely silent and costs a year to operate 24/7. The room smells clean and fresh and I don't have allergy problems.

I would love to know from these lemmings (especially from the ones who own a herd of cats) if the best rated Consumer Reports air cleaner eliminated their need to dust?

I am amazed at any rating below 4 stars! I understand if you get a hissing or "lightning" sound, Then send it back. Over the years I took 2 back to the Sharper Image store which they exchanged no questions asked! The principal is this: The Ionic Breeze creates negative Ions and throws them out the front of the unit. As it does it draws air through it and will catch some of the airborne partials. Most of what it does is to "catch" partials with the negative ions attaching themselves to the dander or allergen and driving it to the ground. The offending allergen is no longer in the air for you to breathe, thereby making the air cleaner. You DO have to vacuum more often but the space is truly cleaner. I have three of them right now, normally had four. A large unit will generally clean a 12 X 14 room in less than 3 hours. I am ashamed to say I had a mouse (dead) in a trap for a long time and was unaware of it until I cleaned the room, there was no scent of it at all! ( Should have been from the look of it, Sorry folks). I'm just saying its that good! The unit is expensive, but when they work, they WORK!

Do Not Forget to Pack the Little Things on Your Camping Trip

Making a checklist is one of the mandatory things we do when preparing to go camping. Many a checklist will have obvious items on them like tent and tent-pegs - but hey, if you forget those then why bother?

What is not often seen is a list of those smaller items that can really come in handy in emergency or even everyday situations alike. The key word here is small - items that can be packed in a small bag or pack and stowed away easily. But first, here is a real world example that happened to yours truly:

My wife and I were camping in the tropics in our pop-top camper. We had the awning out. The sun was out, and we had a great day. After a day of doing nothing we were really tired and so turned in around 10pm.

At 3am the next morning I awoke to the sound of high winds and torrential rain. After about another ten minutes of listening to the crescendo of the rain, there was an almighty crash that had me swiftly jumping out of bed and opening the door of the camper. The sight greeting me was not a pretty one. Rain had collected in the awning forming a large pool. Eventually the weight of the water was too much for one of the awning supporting arms and it had snapped bringing the awning and its load of water crashing down. What to do on a dark, wet and windy night, albeit hardly dressed for the occasion? Simple. Screw the head off the broom, grab the roll of duct tape and make a temporary splint for the damaged arm using the broom handle and some good old duct tape. I was back in bed in five minutes after lowering one of the awning legs to provide a good slope for the rain to drain off (lesson learnt).

Ahh duct tape... One of those little things - easy to forget, but oh so handy in times of need. Here are some others for consideration. Maybe you can add to the list.

Velcro. The double sided type. You can use it like duct tape but it is re-useable. I buy it by the metre and use it for all manner of things around camp. Helps to keep many things nice and tidy and secure (maybe mischievous children!).

BlueTac. Lots of uses here. Keep candles standing upright, secure smaller articles from rolling around when travelling.

Cell phone. Not for what you think because you may be camping outside a coverage area; but most cell phones now include a camera, calculator, time and date functions, memo facility, etc - a multi-function gadget indeed.

Miniature LED flashlight. These are light, bright, and the batteries seem to last for ever. Some have a signaling mode too. The type with a headband are especially useful, leaving both hands free (to fix a broken awning for example). They generally come with more than one function too - wide beam, spot, and infra-red.

Small spirit level. Particularly useful if you are camping off the beaten track and want to get your rig level for comfort and fridge efficiency. I also use one to help level my camera when taking award winning snapshots!

Multi-function tool. You know, the type that fold out and you have a complete tool kit in the palm of your hand! There are different varieties of these. When you do get one make sure you are getting one that will provide the tools you want, and one that is a high quality brand - multi-function junk will not help much in the long term.

Locking penknife or pocket knife. Mine has just two blades - a knife blade and a screw driver cum file. Keep it sharp and lightly oiled.

A small compass. No I'm not getting into survival mode, but this could prove useful when setting up camp on a dull day. Also useful of course if you do not have a GPS when hiking, though I swear I could blindfold my wife and she would always point out north.

A whistle. If you want to get attention, summon help, use the whistle!

Batteries. I always carry a good supply of the smaller batteries for the small electrical items - flashlight, firelighter, TV remote!

Jubilee Clips. You know, those worm gear expandable ring clamps. Not essential but I carry a variety of smaller sizes. You never know when one of these is going to save your day.

A selection of fuses. I carry the blade type for the car and some spare cartridge type too for the electrical appliances.

A small amount of cord and maybe some shock-cord too. I suppose you could say that duct tape or velcro will substitute here, but would that be overkill? I am a firm believer in the right tool for the job.

This is not an exhaustive selection by any means, but I hope it gives you fuel for thought. Happy camping.

I moved in with my girlfriend, and she keeps a fan at the end of her bed for night noise, which helps her sleep. One day while cleaning, I had to move the fan, and I noticed it was full of hair and dust. We have a beautiful dog but she sheds regularly. I decided that we needed to replace the fan with an air purifier; if we want noise at night, it might as well catch the junk in the air instead of circulating it back into the air.

We went to walmart and bought a HEPPA filter unit that was 9, about the same size as this Winix 9000. After 4 months, the filters were black and clogged with dust and hair. It was time to replace the filters. We went back to walmart to buy the filters, which were . I quickly discovered that after replacing the filters twice, I've paid for the purifier; I needed a permanent filter. I returned that purifier for a tower purifier with a UV light inside, and a permanent HEPPA filter that needed cleaning when dirty. As soon as we turned it on, it had a loud vibration noise that was unbearable. We returned it to walmart and just got a refund.

Searching for the best air purifier, we went to Brookstone. They have a 9 unit called a Pure Ion, air purifier. It was large and white, like a tower; full of mirrors that magnetically trap the stuff in the air. You just wash it off and let it dry, then put it back in. After only a few nights, electrostatic popping noises would occur in the middle of the night, scaring the dog out of the room and waking us up. I called Brookstone, and complained about the "silent" air purifier sounding like a crackling camp fire; they took the purifier back as well. Now, I am determined to find the perfect air purifier, and I think it is this Winix 9000.

I have watched the videos for this product on their website, and there's another video on YouTube. The most interesting information came from these videos. I have never really thought about this, but they say the air indoors is 50 times more polluted than the air outdoors. Airborne viruses and bacteria travel through the air, and we keep getting the same colds and flu all the time. This air purifier really caught my eye because of the 3rd layer in the filter; the nano silver mesh, neutralizes viruses and bacteria on contact. Secondly, after clean air passes over the plasma wave, it charges the ions and sends them flying through the air, neutralizing more viruses and bacteria in the air. The videos describe it as "washing your home". It was fascinating. So not only will this purifier remove contaminants from the air, but it also makes the new purified air continue to clean other things it comes into contact with in the home. The plasma also doesn't release harmful ozone, unlike some air purifiers that are still in stores.

My girlfriend and I both have sinus infections at the moment, and we are very excited about receiving this product which will: (1) Snatch everything harmful from the air, (2) Give us noise at nighttime, (3) Kill viruses and bacteria in the air, (4) Catch all the dust and dog hair, (5) Make the house smell better. It's odd to be so happy about an air purifier, but I feel like it will really improve our indoor environment.

We've been using the Winix 9000 for a month now, and we love it. After 3 days, the inside of the house smelled clean and fresh, and it was very noticeable. The odor and dust sensors are fun to watch; we notice that after a shower, or after using the bathroom, the smell of shampoo or something you may have flushed will trigger the odor sensors and the fan will speed up significantly until it detects cleaner air! After a month, I took the front cover off to see what the filter had captured. It was covered with dog hair and dust. I simply vacuumed it with the crevice tool on my vacuum extensions, and it cleared it right out. We are moving at the end of the month, and we will be buying a second Winix 9000; one will go in the bedroom, and the other will be in the den. I never thought I'd be so interested in an air purifier, but it's so nice to walk into a home with air inside that's cleaner than the air outside. You breathe better, and relax easier. We've slept better too.

It's so quiet (even on high setting) and it really helps eliminate the dust. It also detects odors of all kinds: shampoo scent, bad breath (kid-tested), scented candles. The turbo setting is loud, so I don't use that unless absolutely needed.

We agree with other reviewers in that dust and odors seem to be much more in control since we purchased. Initially we didn't run machine since we live in a high humidity area. We have now begun to use on a regular basis and are pleased. We have three animals that move about freely and have run the machine in the areas that are heavily used. We also have a wood stove that contributes to the dust factor. Will need to see how it affects our comfort after a full season of use.

I am very pleased with the performance of the Winix Air Cleaners. They work very well. I really like the automatic way they adjust the fan speed. They have two sensors. One detects odors and another detects dust. It automatically adjusts the speed based on these sensors. They really do work. If I spray some air freshener, even in another room, the units immediately detects the "odor", the odor light turn on, and the fan speeds up. The downside is that if you are the type of person that wears a lot of perfume or sprays room freshener around, the unit will be working hard to clear the air.

It works just as well for dust. For example, If my dog shakes himself near the unit, probably disbursing some dust or dander into the air, the dust sensor lights up and the unit goes into high speed mode.

It also has a sleep mode which prevents the unit from going into high speed mode in a darkened room.

It's a great product and seems very reasonably priced compared to the competition.

Over the years I took 2 back to the Sharper Image store which they exchanged no questions asked! The principal is this: The Ionic Breeze creates negative Ions and throws them out the front of the unit. As it does it draws air through it and will catch some of the airborne partials. Most of what it does is to "catch" partials with the negative ions attaching themselves to the dander or allergen and driving it to the ground. The offending allergen is no longer in the air for you to breathe, thereby making the air cleaner. You DO have to vacuum more often but the space is truly cleaner. I have three of them right now, normally had four. A large unit will generally clean a 12 X 14 room in less than 3 hours. I am ashamed to say I had a mouse (dead) in a trap for a long time and was unaware of it until I cleaned the room, there was no scent of it at all! ( Should have been from the look of it, Sorry folks). I'm just saying its that good! The unit is expensive, but when they work, they WORK!

Rabbit Air MinusA2 wall-mount kit for (model SPA-700A and SPA-780A) Review

I've had this thing running for a couple of days now, and it does work very well. I checked it using a green laser pointer, which brightly illuminates tiny particles in the air along the length of the beam. When moved across the output vent of the MinusA2 the beam becomes almost invisible, so I have no doubts it's doing it's job.

It is very quiet on the low settings, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it silent, there is a quiet steady tone emitted but it's not too bothersome unless you're close to it. I would certainly prefer if it were only the white noise of the air movement that was audible, though.

As part of my review I had previously mentioned the fact that this purifier was taking a disliking to my humidifier. I've done some further research and testing and found that it was the fault of my humidifier. It turns out that ultrasonic humidifiers inject a really nasty volume of particulate matter into the air while they run and so the MinusA2 was constantly having to filter it. This, again, was easily verifiable with my green laser pointer. I've switched to warm mist humidifiers (that simply boil/evaporate the water) and no more issues, the two live happily side-by-side.

So: DO NOT use an ultrasonic humidifier in conjunction with this purifier. In fact, based on the volume of particles they throw into the air, I'd seriously recommend against ultrasonic humidifiers in general.

I've had the MinusA2 running steady for weeks now and it's still doing it's job extremely well.

This is just a cheap piece of metal plate, pretty thin and feels flimsy. It's also not very wide, I wasn't able to find 2 studs that were close enough to properly mount this and when I screwed it onto a single stud with the center 2 holes, the sides bend away from the wall a bit when the Rabbit Air is hung. I had to improvise and screw the plate onto a 5-ply piece of wood and then mounted the wood+plate onto a single stud. Seems secure now...
