How to Select the Right Air Purifier For Your Needs

Air Purifiers are very popular among home owners today as indoor air pollution is significantly higher than what you find outdoors. Some estimates say that indoor pollutions rate are, at a minimum, 25% higher than outdoor ones. An air purifier can help to remedy this by ridding the air of contaminants such as tobacco smoke, dust, pollen and pet dander. Yet, every air purifier is not the same and care needs to be taken in choosing to ensure you get the purification you need. Things that must be considered when selecting an air purifier are number of times the air is cleaned in an hour and how large of an area it covers, which purification method is used, and what is the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). By choosing based on these criteria, you will be sure to get a model that meets all of your needs.

When selecting between various air purifiers, see how much coverage they offer and how many times they clean the air in a room in an hour. The first is of importance as you may need more than one unit for the space you are trying to purify. Thorough purification will not occur if the unit is small while too large of a unit will waste energy. Also, consider how many times the air in a room is cleaned and changed which is known as air changes per hour. The higher the number the cleaner and fresher the air is.

Before choosing which air purifiers to buy, determine which purification method is used. There are three and each has its own positive and negatives. An ozone generator uses ozone to purify the air. They work great to remove mold and fungi, yet cannot be used in the presence of humans as the levels of ozone generated can lead to health issues. High Efficiency Particle Air (HEPA) purifiers capture more than 99% of air contaminants, even minuscule ones. Doctors love them and you will to as they are low maintenance and do not produce any ozone. Yet, the cost of replacing air filters can be very high and they can be noisy as well as electricity hogs. Electrostatic or Ionic purifiers are quiet and energy efficient and have washable filters. Yet, downsides include the fact that they do not capture a large number of contaminants, are high maintenance, and a by-product of the product is ozone, although not in dangerous levels.

CADR is an important consideration when choosing air purifiers. This is the measure of how well a unit removes removes tobacco smoke, dust and pollen from the air. The higher the number, the cleaner the air will be. An independent test laboratory determines these ratings so you can be assured it is not biased. Consider all of the above when choosing air purifiers to ensure you get a model that is perfect for your family as well as your lifestyle.
